The first thing to do would be to check how much free space your laptop has and if it's constrained, see if maybe a bit of 'tidying up' could yield a usable amount of space. Though to me it seems a bit of a waste of money to go buy a USB-HDD just to port some movies onto a NAS. Or perhaps see if you can 'direct attach' the NAS to the laptop temporarily using USB if the NAS supports such functionality. However, if you really are that tight on space, then yes, attaching an external USB-HDD is one way to go (or maybe a largish flash drive which might be cheaper.) If you did so, you could either copy/paste from USB-HDD across the network, or do as advocated by someone in an earlier post, rip everything to the external HDD then go plug it into your NAS (if it has a USB port) and copy direct from USB-HDD using the NAS's utilities.

It's arguably a bit more 'fiddly' that way, but it's certainly do-able. So, rip movie1, copy it to NAS, delete off laptop, rip movie2, copy to NAS, delete off laptop, etc. There's no need to rip everything first, then copy it to your NAS en mass. You could just as easily have single share called (say) 'tank' or 'media' and organise content (or not) using the folder structure. one for 'movies,' one for 'sitcoms,' one for 'documentaries,' 'music,' etc. Once created, then the NAS will 'advertise' such shares onto your network and you should be able to map/mount them and read/write to them (depending on the permissions you set.) Some people (including myself) like to create multiple shares reflecting content e.g. Doubtless there is a tool in the NAS control panel for creating shares. ? If not, you won't be able to read/write to NAS using things like a mapped drives. When setting up your NAS, did you create any 'shares'. It also means I can 'check' the files on the laptop before moving them. I do as others have advocated and rip to a local drive on my laptop, then copy up to the media tank. To echo that, ripping across the network (especially Wi-Fi) can be slower as well as adding complexity (as in, there's more 'things to go wrong,') whilst ripping.
